Signed language interpreters from around Australia come together annually, to exchange experiences, to share knowledge and to gain expertise. The ASLIA National Conference is an opportunity many interpreters look forward to every year.
The profession of sign language interpreters is a young and rapidly growing profession. It is, therefore, vital for all interpreters to devote their time and energy to continuing education. We in Australia are particularly fortunate by way of interpreter training, health and safety supports, a Code of Ethics to keep our professional practise in check, and we are paid to do this work. However, signed language interpreters in our region are not sharing this same experience, nor are they enjoying the same annual coming together of interpreters as we do during the ANC. Therefore, to support our peers in developing nations, and to provide the opportunity to participate in our annual conference, the ANC09 has established for the first time, the Creating Opportunities Fund initiative
The ANC09 Creating Opportunities Fund initiative will provide financial support to interpreters from Developing Countries with a GDP of 15.000 (fifteen thousand) Australian dollars or lower to attend the ANC. Individuals in countries where this applies are encouraged to make contact with the ‘Developing Countries Inclusion Sub Committee’, no later than Monday 30th March 2009.
It is hoped that the ANC09 Creating Opportunities Fund initiative will receive financial support from interpreter associations, interpreting agencies and from individuals. These donations are essential to the fund to provide support to eligible interpreters.
All donations, (and nothing is too small) are tax deductible. Receipts will be provided prior to the conference commencing.
